Seekonk (Massachusetts) Speedway beat the bad weather last weekend to complete it's second NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series program of the 2005 season. Dave Darling of Reboboth, Massachusetts won the first of the scheduled Twin Pro Stock feature races. Defending NASCAR Track Champion Vinnie Annarummo of Swansea, Massachusetts won the second 25-lap Pro Stock feature after finishing second to Darling in the first feature.

The Late Model division feature was shortened due to a curfew with Bob Grigas of Marshfield, Massachusetts in the lead when the checkered flag came out on lap 16, giving him the win. It was a Rhode Island sweep of the top three positions in the Sport-4 Truck feature with Chad Hancock, Bill Presco and Ken Morrisette coming across the finish line. Taunton's Greg Perry, Jr. bested hometown driver Dick Cavallaro in the Street Stocks. Connecticut's Joe Ferrucci edged out Taunton’s Zach Tucan in the 750 SYRA Mini-Cup feature. Brian Como, Jr. of Charlton, Massachusetts won the SYRA 600 main. Jeriah Rodrick of East Taunton, Massachusetts took the checkered flag in the SYRA Rookie Feature.

On a cool, cloudy and blustery day, Scott Sharp of Norwalk, Connecticut was the first driver to take four timed laps around the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway and produced the benchmark for all others to beat with his average of 227.126 mph in the #8 Delphi Fernandez Panoz/Honda/Firestone challenger.

Sharp was almost giddy with the result as he retained the third best speed once six hours of qualifying were complete. "I'm ecstatic," Sharp declared. "For us to come out in qualifying trim this morning, post our best time of the month and back it up, well, that is just peaking at the right time. This team focuses much more on the race and to end up at the front is tremendous." The "Indianapolis 500" goes off this Sunday at noon and airs live on ABC.

Motorcycle Hill Climbers from New England have done well on the AMA National Series as they have all learned their craft at the Quoboag Riders Club in Monson, Massachusetts which has conducted local meets for many years. One of the area's top riders is Dave Watson of Ludlow, Massachusetts, who took a fifth overall in the 540 Class at the recent meet AMA National event held in Middlebury, Indiana. Ryan Thibualt of Tiverton, Rhode Island came in ninth while Michael Goncalves of Palmer, Massachusetts placed 12th. Watson also competes in the 800 Class and put his Honda in eighth place at the finish.

The stars and cars of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour return to Stafford Motor Speedway for the "15th Annual Haynes Materials 150" this Friday, May 27th. The field will be headlined by defending Whelen Modified Tour champion Tony Hirschman, who is the defending champion of the "Haynes Materials 150", and who was the winner of the "Tech-Net Spring Sizzler" one month ago at Stafford.

The "Haynes Materials 150" has become known for a race that features close finishes. Last season, Hirschman held off a hard charging Reggie Ruggiero by .41 seconds. Two years ago, Jerry Marquis led only the final lap of the race as he passed Todd Szegedy on the last lap and held him off by less than a car length to drive to victory lane.

Former SMS Late Model and SK Modified competitor Zach Sylvester currently leads the WMT points standings with second place finishes in each of the first two WMT races of the season. Ted Christopher is second, with Chuck Hossfeld third, Hirschman fourth and Chris Kopec currently fifth in his return to the tour.

Not only are Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut drivers challenging American Canadian Tour Late Model drivers from northern New England this season, now it's filtering down to the ACT Sportsman eight-race tour. Chris Curtis of Rutland, Massachusetts is a new face in the ACT Sportsman Series. Curtis finished second to Jason Bonnett of St. Albans, Vermont at the Canaan Fair Speedway, recently.

A Six-Hour Enduro race is scheduled for this Saturday at F1 Outdoors on Rt. 18 in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts. It's one of four major races which includes events in Pennsylvania, Lime Rock Park (Connecticut) and in Portugal. Post time is 9:00 a.m. at F1 Outdoors.

Let's see what else is on the southern New England schedule this busy Memorial Day weekend. It's a pretty hectic schedule. On Saturday, the True Value Modified Series make the first of three visits to the Seekonk Speedway at 6:00 p.m. Waterford (Connecticut) Speedbowl will host the ISMA Super-Modifieds for the first time beginning at 6:00 p.m. Whip City Speedway in Westfield, Massachusetts has a crowded Mini Sprint program on the quarter-mile dirt track.

For the roadracers, Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut has a full weekend with Pro-Am Sprints, SCCA Mazda Speed Miata Cup, Formula Ford, Porsche Challenge and Vintage Racing.

For the bikers, the Capeway Rovers in Middleboro, Massachusetts host the NCSC Motocross tour on Saturday at noon. Motox 338 in Southwick, Massachusetts also has Motocross racing the same day dubbed NEMX vs. Winchester (New Hampshire) Speed Park at 9:00 a.m.

For the draggers, New England Dragway in Epping, New Hampshire has the IHRA Road Warriors in all weekend.

There's also something for the thrill seekers. Thompson International Speedway offers "Eve of Destruction" which includes a Demolition Derby, School Bus Demo and an Enduro on Sunday night. Seekonk returns for a big Thrill Show program comprised of Figure 8's, an Enduro, Spectator Drags, a Demo Derby and a small fireworks display on the same night.

    Till next time...
