POST-RACE
NOTES
BASALITE
150 by Havoline
Repeat winner at Stockton … Mike
David (No. 2 Bennett Lane Winery Ford) recorded his
second win at his home track of Stockton (Calif.) 99
Speedway, with a victory in the Basalite 150 by Havoline
on Saturday, April 29. It marked his second win on the
tight quarter-mile oval in three years and his third
career series victory overall. David joins the list of
other two-time winners at Stockton – Austin Cameron,
Dick Bown and Jim Bown. Topping the list of winners at
the historic track is Jack McCoy, with five victories.
Lynch takes first Budweiser Pole
… Nick Lynch (No.
29 Baja Motorsports/Mr. Gas Dodge) scored his first
career Budweiser Pole in only his fourth race in the
AutoZone West Series. He turned a lap of 63.003 mph in
qualifying, driving the same car his brother won the
pole with in last year’s event. After contact with
another car sent his Dodge spinning in turn four, Lynch
charged back through the field to finish a career best
12th.
Career best marks … After
starting at the back of the field, Eric Hardin (No. 18
DSNTV/Legacy Int Realty Chevrolet) registered his career
best finish, crossing the line ninth at Stockton. He was
also the top finishing Sunoco Rookie of the Year
candidate. Meanwhile, Carl Harr (No. 71 WestWorld
Computers Chevrolet) finished seventh, to match his
career-best mark.
Debut for composite body … Brett
Thompson and his Thompson Motorsports team became the
first team to compete in a race with the composite body,
which is being phased into competition in the NASCAR
Grand National Division beginning this year. They
unveiled the car, built by Thompson Motorsports in their
Idaho shop, during an open practice session conducted by
the track on Friday. Although he qualified fifth, a spin
early in the race left Thompson to charge from the back
of the pack to finish fourth. Amid a field of cars that
crossed the finish line with an assortment of crumpled
sheet metal – the No. 61 Rich Thompson Trucking
Chevrolet suffered little significant damage to its
molded synthetic composite body.
Record tied, again and again and
again … The
Stockton event marked the fourth consecutive race in
which a record 17 drivers finished on the lead lap. The
string of four straight races dates back to last season’s
finale at Bakersfield.
21 of 22 finish … Only
one car dropped out of competition at Stockton, with 21
of the 22 starters finishing the race.
POWERade Power Move …
Carl Harr’s charge from 18th on the grid to
finish seventh earned the Canadian driver the POWERade
Power Move of the Race Award at Stockton. At each Grand
National Division event, POWERade presents the award to
the driver who advances the most positions.
Featherlite Most Improved … Johnny
Borneman (No. 8 Borneman Plastering/Red Line Oil Ford
captured the Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award.
After mechanical problems left him with a 33rd-place
finish a week ago at Phoenix, Borneman bounced back to
finish in the runner-up spot at Stockton. Featherlite
presents the award at each event to the driver who
improves the most finishing positions from the previous
event.
